AeroVax Trial Details

The AeroVax research team will explain the details of the AeroVax trial to participants who may be eligible to participate based on their answers to the Screening Survey.

If you have any questions or want more information before completing the Screening Survey, please contact the research team by email (aerovax@mcmaster.ca) or by phone (289-659-4901).

Participant Visits & Procedures

You will be asked to attend 4 or 5 in-person visits at the study site over 8 weeks.

View the Participant Visit Schedule

You will be asked to provide blood samples (approximately 55mL or 4 tablespoons) at 4 study visits.

The vaccine/placebo inhalation occurs over 2 minutes of regular breathing.

Click Here to watch a brief 2 minute video of how the vaccine is inhaled.

For the first seven days after the vaccine, you will be asked to record your temperature once a day and any symptoms you may experience.

Random Assignment to Vaccine Group or Placebo Group

You will be randomly assigned to receive either the vaccine or a placebo. Being randomly assigned means that you are put into a group by chance.

This study will randomize participants in a 2:1 ratio which means that for every three participants, the computer will randomly assign two of the participants to receive the active vaccine and the other participant will get the placebo.

Neither you, the study staff, nor the study doctors will know which group you are assigned to.

Bronchoscopy Sub-Study (McMaster University Site only)

Participants at the McMaster University site will be invited to participate in a sub-study that collects cells from the mucosal surface of the lung through a procedure called a bronchoscopy.

The purpose of this sub-study is to study the T cell responses and antibody responses to the COVID virus proteins in the lungs. Participation in the sub-study is optional.

Participants at the McMaster site can choose to participate in the main AeroVax study only or in the sub-study as well.

Participants in the bronchoscopy sub-study will have additional procedures.
